Do you know what newborns totally suck at doing?

POSING FOR THE CAMERA… pffff! I know, right! (ha!)

It took two days trying to capture the perfect photo of Lou for her birth announcements.

After nearly hundreds of outtakes, I finally captured just the right lighting, just the right look, and just the right expression. My husband did some retouching in Photoshop. We choose wording and submitted the order.

An hour later, we received this e-mail from the designer…

Thank you for your interest in our designs! We’ll be happy to work on your proof, however, we are unable to use PROFESSIONAL photographs without a release form… or we’ll be happy to accept any non-professional photos. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

PROFESSIONAL?!!! Oh ha ha ha!

Consider me flattered beyond words, Ryan from…. ahem! ahem!SweetPeaGreetings. (Yeah, you just earned yourself that shout out.)

For my birthday, Mr. D (perfect, wonderful, thoughtful husband that he is) surprised me with a Nikon D40.

Yes, it’s my very first very nice camera, and in case you were wondering… Yes, I am IN LOVE WITH IT!

I’ve been reluctant to brag blog about it because, truth be told, I’m not a very good photographer. I just aspire to be… one day. However, having a fancy-shmancy camera has gone a long way in improving my photos.

I just have to take lots of shots to get the one that I want. LOTS.

  1. Well done Grace!
I know what you mean about the hundreds of outtakes, though. Crazy.
I have the D40x and I LOVE it!

  2. Awesome job, and she is so darned cute!

  3. That blanket looks really comfy.

  4. Too funny! I love the announcement picture. I find the best pictures I get are when I’m not trying. Of course, then the outfit is not right, there is spit up or food, but everything else is great.

A good camera helps, but it’s the eye of the photographer that really makes the difference.

  5. AWESOME! You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE having an SLR– with a newborn AND a toddler. I got mine on Jayne’s 1st birthday and I joke that we’re going to have to have a second child just so I can use it to shoot a newborn. When I look at the point-and-shoots we have from her first year now I just cringe at all the missed opportunities.

Careful, though, SLRs are a serious gateway to a photography addiction! Soon you’ll be coveting an external flash, a macro lens, etc. and you’ll need more hard drive space to store all the outtakes. 😉 Looks like you’re well on your way–and the birth announcement shot is super cute, too. Good lighting.

  6. that’s totally the camera I want! Love the pictures…you definitely have a good eye. Of course, an adorable subject like that precious baby makes it easier!

  7. It DOES look like a professional photo!

I have to get myself one of those cameras. Time is a wasting and the kids deserve to have GOOD pics taken of them… right? 😉

  8. HEHE, I have a Canon DSLR and I adore it. Makes my photos look MUCH nicer. I totally abuse the multi-shot feature, and just hold down the buttom till I feel like I got a good one 😛

  9. We have a Canon SLR and it’s been the best investment ever! We still haven’t taken great photos of the boys yet. I really wanted to get birth announcements out, but just didn’t have the time. I’m lucky anything has gotten done lately. And I go back to work in one week, Ugh!

  10. Yay for you!! I have a great camera too and some of the shots it can get wow. But to be honest for every 200 I take about 2 come out, lol

  11. consider my question from the previous post answered…i’m too impatient to read your next post, obviously!
