A Quiet Tribute

We received some terrible news yesterday.

Sometime while I was dumping out the sand in Scout’s shoes and Mike was between meetings, Grandma Duffy quietly passed away. She was just three weeks short of her 100th birthday.

We knew this day was coming. Her health had been failing for quite some time, but she never lost her sharp wit or her critical eye. Opinionated and assertive in the way that only comes as a privilege of age, she was a remarkable force. I guess we all hoped she would just keep going as always.

She was Mike’s paternal grandmother. I only met her once, but wish I could have known her so much better.

I just keep thinking, “Wow! A hundred years old… With everything she’s witnessed, what must she have thought of the world?”

She would have loved to tell me, too.

This past December, she wrote goodbye letters to each of her grandchildren, grandchildren-in-law, and great-grandchildren. Her last request of us was to send recent photos of Scout. Of course, we were more than happy to oblige.

Still, when that call came yesterday, we weren’t really ready for it. Would we ever have been?
