Drawing Again

Last month I had some time to sit down with my Wacom Bamboo tablet and I loaded up myPaint to try sketching out some sprites. It has been forever since I’ve had a chance to draw anything, so I’m a bit rusty. I was looking over some Michael Turner artwork prior to sketching so the sketch is roughly influenced by his style and proportions. I’m leaning towards more of a western comic book approach to the art, rather than something more anime or manga influenced.

I still need to work out a good art production pipeline… myPaint is great for sketching, but pretty bad for editing (as in you can’t edit, you can only redraw.) Swapping between myPaint and Gimp on a regular basis may be a bit clunky. I’ll have to think on this some more.

On the coding end of things, I’m almost ready to play with some animated sprites. I had to set development aside for a while since work and life got busy, but I’m feeling the urge to start work on the game again.

About The Author

I've had the good fortune to work on a variety of quality game, TV, and film projects. I graduated with a degree in Film Production from the University of Southern California while learning programming on my own time, and then built a career solving technical challenges in artistic mediums. I have primarily focused on writing code for game engines, computer graphics pipelines, character rigging, and tools that support artists' workflows. I've had the chance work in mobile game development and help craft solutions for remote configuration and metrics, analytics, LiveOps, backend systems, ad monetization and user acquisition, and build systems. I have contributed code, managed and trained teams, and advised other departments on best ways to move forward. I value good communication, solid engineering practices, and smooth development processes, and strive to maintain these while still balancing against the realities of delivering a product to customers within the resources available. I'm looking forward to working on game titles that players love, that they talk about with their friends, and that they will remember fondly in years to come.

When I’m in the mood to draw with Mypaint (I tend to use a lot of programs, they all seem to have their own advantages) I tend to sketch in Gimp first, finalise the sketch in Mypaint and ink and colour in Mypaint mainly and go back to Gimp to finalise the image – cropping, filters, colour correction and what-have-you.

I *would* like it if Mypaint had more transform tools and stuff like gradients and the like, but I guess it’s a matter of waiting and seeing what sort of requests users make.

Lately I’m keeping an eye on Krita. 😛
