The Never-ending Game of Why

When it comes to parenting, Mr. D has always looked forward the long, drawn out conversations in which he gets to explain the world and all of its workings to our kids.

(You other parents may know it as the “Never-ending game of WHY”…)

Having an ever inquisitive mind and an inability to answer eh-nee-thing with a simple “yes” or “no”, this is right up his alley.

Unfortunately, he’s not the one who gets to spend all day with Scout…

“Mommy, what are you doing?”

“Washing dishes, Sweetie.”

“Why are you washing dishes?”

“Because they’re just a little bit dirty.”

“How did they get just a little bit dirty?”

“Well, remember how we JUST ate breakfast? We ate it off of these dishes and that’s how they got dirty.”

“So, why don’t you clean them?”

(Stifling eye rolls and a great deal of sighing) “I am.”

Sometimes he’s not as easily satisfied…

“Where are we going?”

“The grocery store.”

“No, Mommy, where are we going?”

“The grocery store.”

“We can’t go to the grocery store. Where are we going?”

“Sorry, Angel. We’re still headed for the grocery store.”

“NO. Mommy. Where… are… we… going?”

“Hey which shoes do you want to wear…”

Then, there are times when he has all of the answers… like when the little boy at the top of slide looks like he’s about to pee his pants in terror.

“He’s just a little scared, Honey. Why don’t you just go down the other slide?” I told him.

So, Scout crouches down, comes face-to-face with the other boy, and asks, “Why are you scared? Just go”…

…and with that Scout gave the boy a hefty shove. Down he went, smiling and giggling along the way, and Scout came tumbling after.

Perhaps Scout’s not as interested in how the world works as he is in how he thinks it should work.

Oh, we are so at the questions here, too! And, she is relentless..and that’s probably being generous.

I think my 8 year old is the same too! Lots of questions, but wants the world to work how she wants it to work.
