A Learning Experience

How do you know when it’s time to get out of the house more… and take your kid with you?

When you ask him if he’d like to go to the children’s museum and he says…

“No, Mommy. We can’t go. The floors are DIRTY. Vacuum stairs! Clean bathrooms!”

Wow! I couldn’t have said it better myself. Oh, wait… I did only about a thousand times this past weekend.

Yeee-ah! I decided that it’s definitely time to start getting out more (and stop being such a clean freak maniac), especially since there are tons of kid-friendly things to do around here.

If we’re going to endure the outrageous cost of living, we might as well do some actual living, right?

So last week, I took Scout to the Children’s Discovery Museum.

It’s the big purple building in downtown San Jose with the giant rubber duckie on top. If that doesn’t say “fun”, I don’t know what does.

We’ve never shied away from taking Scout to places that are above his age level– art galleries, restaurants, castles, France, castles in France…

He usually does great, but any place with the potential of being loud… and crowded… and chaotic, like  maybe a CHILDREN’S museum, then his (and my) limit is about an hour. Tops!

Well, we spent FOUR and a HALF hours at the Children’s Discovery Museum and didn’t even notice the time flying by. This place really is geared for kids of ALL ages, from the bubble and “Alice in Wonderland” exhibits…

… to the sand table and the art studio, where a teacher is on hand to lead them in painting and sculpture.

Scout loved it all, but we spent most of our time playing on the vintage fire truck.

By the way, do you know what happens when you let your potty-training son play in the water exhibit and he says he has to go potty RIGHT NOW, but you have no idea where the restrooms are in this crazy place???

… and just when you thought everything is going all hunky-dory with the “big boy pants”, too.

Note to self: Scope out all the nearest bathrooms upon arrival.

  1. That is a really good deal for the price of a movie. Looks like you both had a great time. Maybe my kid and I need a field trip too.
